Synology NAS Failure

Recently we received a data recovery request from a system administrator of an IT company. One night a large capacitor in the UPS blew, sending a surge into the system. The result was two of the three hard drives in the system were fried. That was the only damage to the system, despite the surge needing to pass through the system control panel, power supply, motherboard, and SCSI daughterboard (all of which were undamaged) before getting to the drives. 

Most NAS devices run customized versions of the Linux operating system. Most of the various RAID management systems are based on two RAID technologies in Linux: mdadm and LVM2. These systems create more user-friendly disk management interfaces while the underlying technology remains pure Linux. 

Synology NAS Retrieval Process

As the client’s drives were out of order, the RAID file systems failed as well. The first step to recovering all the data was data retrieval from hard drives damaged by a power surge. In this case, the hard drives’ voltage regulator, also known as the TVS diode, burnt out.

The TVS diode is designed to protect against overvoltage of integrated and hybrid circuits and radio-electronic components. In case of overvoltage, such diode burns out. 

Since the diode is no longer functioning, the disc is not turned on. If you remove the diode, the hard drive will again function normally, only in the unprotected mode. Our engineers extracted most of the data and transferred them to a new HDD.

The next step was to recover the RAID system that failed to overvoltage. Our highly trained team of engineers has years of experience working with such systems and their utility. Mdadm is a software RAID utility used in Linux systems. 

It has several operating modes, such as assemble, build, and create. By using all the options that we had, we successfully recovered the RAID system of our customer. After the recovery process was finished, the client reviewed the result and confirmed the data retrieval procedure.

How to Avoid System Overvoltage

Any change in a network voltage that causes rising above the considered limit reduces the service life of connected devices or destabilizes their operation. Even minor deviations of 5-10% occur regularly, leading to failures in control units, reset of settings, and interference. 

The most efficient and straightforward way to secure your system is to install a device that monitors and corrects any changes in voltage supply.
