A Studio’s Worst Nightmare

It was a typical Friday afternoon in Manhattan. A boutique wedding video studio had spent the past several months filming, editing, and finalizing beautiful wedding memories for over 20 couples. As their editor plugged in the studio’s trusted LaCie d2 Professional 10TB external storage drive to export the final batch of video files, the unexpected happened the system froze. Moments later, it crashed.

Panicked, they tried again. Same result. Then on a second computer. Same outcome. The LaCie d2 wouldn’t mount. All 20 completed wedding projects were trapped inside. The studio had no backup. With several delivery deadlines looming and anxious clients awaiting their wedding videos, the team went into full crisis mode.

They searched for urgent data recovery services in New York and found PITS Data Recovery, a company known for handling high-pressure, critical data loss situations. Within hours, they walked into our lab, hoping we could help recover what they thought might be lost forever.

Drive Not Mounting or Responding

The LaCie d2 Professional is often chosen for its performance, storage capacity, and reliability. It’s used widely by creative professionals, especially those working with large video files. But like any storage device, it’s not immune to failure.

In this case, the drive appeared to power on, but every time it was connected to a computer, it caused the system to crash. It wasn’t just unmountable it was unstable. These symptoms are common when the drive contains internal corruption or physical damage that interferes with read operations.

Because time was critical, we fast-tracked the evaluation process, immediately assigning one of our senior recovery engineers to diagnose the problem.

Evaluation and Diagnosis

Upon opening the LaCie d2 enclosure, our technician identified that it housed a Seagate IronWolf Pro 10TB hard disk drive, a model known for its high performance and use in creative and enterprise environments.

While the drive had no obvious physical trauma, deeper testing revealed that it had developed multiple bad sectors, particularly in areas responsible for storing file system information and video data clusters. These unreadable sectors were causing the system to crash during mounting, as the operating system was unable to properly index the contents of the drive.

Our team compiled a full diagnostic report and outlined a recovery plan. We assured the client that the data appeared recoverable, and they immediately approved the next steps.

What Are Bad Sectors?

A bad sector is a section of a hard drive that has become permanently damaged. This damage prevents the sector from being read or written to, and if crucial system or data files are located in these sectors, they can render the entire drive inoperable.

Bad sectors can form due to a variety of reasons, including physical shock (such as a drop), gradual wear and tear, manufacturing flaws, power surges, or improper disconnection during read/write operations. While a few isolated bad sectors might not be noticeable at first, if they occur in vital areas such as partition tables, metadata clusters, or key video segments they can make the drive crash or freeze entirely.

In this case, several of the bad sectors were located where the wedding video files resided. Every time the system attempted to read these areas, it resulted in a crash, making the data inaccessible through standard methods.

Recovery Workflow

Our recovery process for this LaCie d2 Professional drive included several technical steps, each handled with precision to avoid data loss:

1. Disk Imaging

We created a bit-level, sector-by-sector image of the entire hard drive using proprietary imaging tools. This allows us to work from a clone of the drive, protecting the original from further degradation. During this process, we carefully mapped out and marked bad sectors to avoid read retries that could worsen damage.

2. Bypassing and Isolating Corrupted Areas

With the drive image complete, our software engineers used custom tools to bypass the bad sectors and extract accessible data from the remaining healthy areas. Special care was taken to reconstruct fragmented files and restore the original folder structure, as part of our hard drive recovery process.

3. Rebuilding and Verifying Files

The extracted files were carefully rebuilt and tested for completeness. For video files, we performed playback tests to ensure the media wasn’t corrupted or missing frames. Each of the 20 wedding projects was fully recovered, complete with their original file names, edit folders, and backup versions.

This entire process took just under 48 hours, from evaluation to file verification.

Verifying the Files

After completing the recovery, we transferred the restored video files to a new, encrypted external hard drive. We then scheduled a remote session with the studio’s lead editor, allowing them to browse and verify the recovered content before we shipped the final drive.

They were able to:

  • Review each project folder
  • Play back full-length video files
  • Confirm that all edits and color grading files were intact
  • Verify the restored naming and organizational structure

The studio was thrilled. Every wedding file was there complete and ready to deliver. What had started as a potential business disaster ended with relief, gratitude, and a few emotional phone calls to their clients.

Best Practices for Prevention

This case serves as a strong reminder: even enterprise-level drives like the LaCie d2 Professional can fail unexpectedly. Here’s how studios and creative professionals can avoid similar scenarios:

  • Always maintain at least two separate backups: use both cloud and physical storage
  • Adopt RAID or NAS systems for higher redundancy in post-production workflows
  • Avoid using a single external drive as the sole source of completed work
  • Run regular drive health checks using SMART diagnostics
  • Replace drives every 3–5 years, especially if used heavily in media workflows

Taking these steps can prevent thousands of dollars in potential loss and more importantly, protect irreplaceable memories.
